'Meet the people' interview questions

Name:

Nick Plumb

Job Title:

e-Business Sales Specialist

Responsibilities:

Recruiting and Managing COMPUTERLINKS Partners to sell the Siemens Wireless LAN solution.

Interests:

Manchester United (season ticket holder), playing tennis and golf ,PS3, Music (listening, going to concerts and learning to play guitar)

1. If you had a million pounds what would you spend it on?

Private Box at Man United, Elton John type hair transplant, buy a nice house by the sea and visit the Far East.

2. If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?

Derren Brown. Is he just clever or is actual real magic like 'the Force' in Star Wars? I have seen him live on stage and it just amazes me....although it is a bit scary. If he could teach me a trick for down the pub, that would be great too.

3. What is the most interesting trip you've ever taken, and why?

I went to Moscow and Leningrad in 1990. It was amazing to visit a country whose culture was so different to ours and visit landmarks like Red Square, the Hermitage and the Winter Palace. I would like to visit there again one day to see how it has changed over the last 20 years or so.

4. McDonalds or Burger King?

Definitely BK. At least the Burgers look and taste a little bit like meat.

5. What was the last book you read?

I have been reading through the Harry Potter books so the last I completed was the Goblet of Fire. I did start the Order of The Phoenix but I got bored. Obviously JK's success speaks for itself....but personally, I think she goes on a bit and likes to use a page where a paragraph will do.

6. What did you want to be when you were 12 years old?

Computer programmer. I was really into my Sinclair Spectrum and Vic 20 in the olden days.

7. If you were the boss for a day what would you change?

Apart from the obvious more pay and shorter working week, I would move the office to nearer where I live. A company helicopter would be nice.

8. How did you end up working for COMPUTERLINKS?

I wanted to work in the Channel and found my current position via Liz at Greenhills in Cambridge. This is the second time I have worked for the company. The first time was in 1995 when the company was called Unipalm.

9. University education or the education of life, which do you consider to be more important?

Education of Life. Too many people go to Uni with the intention of having a jolly....and I think they should only go if they need to have a degree as part of their future career. Dont get me started!

10. Where is the one place you would like to visit before you die and why?

I would love to go to China and Japan just to experience the culture. It looks an amazing place.

11. Marmite love it or hate it?

I have marmite sandwiches everyday for lunch. Lovely.

12. Pub session or meal with a nice bottle of wine, explain why?

Meal with a nice bottle of wine for me every time. Pubs are great for watching the football but it's good to enjoy some nice food, a lovely bottle of plonk and have a chance to chat to friends and actually hear what they are talking about.

Unified Communications - A user's point of view……

Unified Communications is a buzzword within the industry at the moment. Generally it describes forms of communications such as telephony, e-mail, instant messaging, voice mail, fax and now, in some cases, web conferencing all being controlled by an individual user, allowing them to receive or send via these methods of communication wherever they are.

Unified Communications integrates the systems that a user is probably already using and allows them to work in real time. To me one of the most important parts of Unified Communications is presence. Knowing if an intended recipient is available or receiving an alert when they become available is a real asset to a working environment.

To give you an example of this, I sit in an office in Newmarket with 150 other people. I need to speak to our Account Managers on a regular basis about particular deals and quite often this is urgent. Using presence I am able to see when they are available, on the phone, or unavailable, and can set alerts to notify me when they do become available so I then have the option to instant message them or call them. This certainly makes my working day easier and saves me running up and down the stairs!

I also have colleagues that I need to communicate with in other locations. This could be our warehouse manager one mile up the road, or another product manager in one of our worldwide locations. Again, being able to see when they are available saves me a lot of time and eliminates the need to leave messages, either on a voice mail or on e-mail.

Conferencing is another area that I have found particularly useful. In the past, conferencing has cost our business and many others a lot of money to provide a separate system. Most Unified Communication solutions will now provide this with their system and some have the ability to set up a call or bring someone into a call by just simply dragging and dropping.

Smart phones are also now beginning to integrate well within Unified Communications. Some vendors are able to provide a mobile client that will run on the most popular operating systems and enable mobile phones users to easily access features that would normally only be available to telephone extensions connected to a PBX. According to Canalys, EMEA smart phone shipments reached 12.6 million in Q2 2008, up 28% on the figure one year ago.

So it appears that despite the credit crunch businesses are investing in Unified Communications for both improved productivity and cost savings.
