Check Testing The CESG (the Communications Electronic Security Group) is the Information Assurance arm of GCHQ (Government Communications HeadQuarters) and part if their remit is to ensure that protectively marked information is held securely. In terms of electronic data, infrastructure penetration testing is key to achieving this goal. In 1999 the CESG introduced the CHECK scheme, which, once having met certain criteria, allows private companies to conduct penetration tests on HMG networks on the behalf of the CESG. Whilst the CHECK scheme was originally developed to meet the needs of HMG clients, it has become the de facto standard within the penetration testing community. As a result, many non-HMG organisations, including local councils, financial organisations and legal firms now stipulate that organisations wishing to provide penetration testing must be CHECK 'Green'.
